ABOUT THE PARENT COUNCIL

The Parent Council replaces the former School Board and Parent-Teacher Association. It came into being in 2007 as a result of new legislation. At Madras College it consists of up to 30 parents elected from the Parent Forum, and a range of co-opted members. The Parent Council aims

to work in partnership with the school to create a welcoming school

to be inclusive for all (parents, pupils, teachers, wider community)

to promote partnerships between the school, its pupils, all its parents and community

to develop and engage in activities which support the education and welfare of pupils

to identify and represent the views of parents on the education provided by the school, and on other matters affecting the education and welfare of the pupils

It is thus taking on the activities that used to be the remit of the School Board and the PTA. The Constitution of the Council is available from the link top right. There are also links there to the three working groups that functioned in the first year of the Parent Council. Other links there are to external sources of information about Parent Councils and the possible roles of parents in the life of the School.

The Parent Council had three working groups in 2007-8:-

Infrastructure and the New Madras - led by Henry Paul

Events and Fund Raising - led by Mary Scott

School Policy and Communications - led by Adam Alexander

From the 2008-9 session the Parent Council has decided to conduct all business through the main Parent Council, possibly setting up short lifetime sub-committees for particular issues.
